Overview

I chose this property because of its incredible location on Kauai’s North Shore and the listing’s portrayal of a contemporary, well-maintained oceanfront home. The location absolutely lived up to expectations. The panoramic views of Hanalei Bay were breathtaking, the setting was peaceful, and it was everything I had hoped for in a North Shore vacation.

Unfortunately, the home itself did not.

My two-star rating is not a reflection of the location—it’s a reflection of the significant gap between the property’s advertised presentation and the condition we encountered upon arrival.

What We Loved

The property’s greatest asset is its location. The oceanfront setting is exceptional, with incredible views and convenient access to one of Kauai’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. Although the beach directly in front of the house is not ideal for swimming, a usable section is only a short walk away. If I were reviewing the location alone, this would easily be a five-star property.

Listing vs. Reality

The listing presents a contemporary, updated oceanfront home. In reality, we found a property showing widespread signs of age and deferred maintenance.

Throughout our stay we observed and photographed:

Extensive rust and corrosion on curtain rods, brackets, bathroom fixtures, lighting fixtures, door hardware, electrical hardware, and numerous other visible metal components.
Curtain rods secured with duct tape.
Visible water damage and deteriorated ceiling and wall finishes.
Rust staining on fixtures and hardware throughout the home.
Damaged furniture surfaces and worn finishes.
Multiple cosmetic repairs that had not been completed.

While I understand the effects of Kauai’s salt-air environment, the overall condition of the home was significantly more worn than represented in the listing photographs. Had the listing accurately reflected the property’s condition, I would have selected a different rental.

Security Concerns

On our first evening, the home’s alarm unexpectedly activated, creating concern while we were still becoming familiar with the property. We also experienced difficulty engaging the front door deadbolt, which did not consistently lock properly.

Although no security incident occurred, these issues diminished our confidence in the property’s overall upkeep.

Host Response

To the owner’s credit, he was initially willing to discuss our concerns and acknowledged during our phone conversation that several of the rusted fixtures had already been identified approximately one month before our arrival and placed on a maintenance list. He later advised that those repairs had been expedited following our complaint.

While I appreciate that future guests may benefit from those repairs, they do not change the condition of the property we experienced during our stay.

Unfortunately, despite several attempts to resolve the matter amicably, we were unable to reach a reasonable resolution. Subsequent communications became increasingly adversarial and included personal remarks unrelated to the concerns I raised.

Final Thoughts

This review is not intended to discourage anyone from visiting Kauai or the North Shore. In fact, I would enthusiastically recommend the area to anyone.

Rather, this review is intended to help future travelers make an informed decision. At a nightly rate exceeding $1,200, I believe guests should reasonably expect the property’s current condition to closely match the listing photographs and description. In my experience, it did not.

The location deserves five stars. The home itself does not.

If you’re considering this property, I strongly recommend requesting recent photographs of the interior and asking specific questions about the current condition of the home before booking.
